Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give a detailed overview of the Russian syntax and to deepen students’ theoretical knowledge, to apply the theoretical knowledge when analysing the text.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student should be able:
- to define the syntactic terms;
- to apply these terms in practice and to draw the appropriate conclusion based on observed phenomena while analysing certain texts and exercises;
- to deduce and to explain the patterns of syntactic phenomena and to determine the syntactic abnormalities;
- to give appropriate arguments to prove his observations and, eventually, to offer a solution according to standard.

  • 1. The Syntax as a Part of Grammar.
  • 2. The Russian and the Czech Syntactic Tradition: Differences and Similarities. The Subject of Syntax from Different Linguists’ Points of View.
  • 3. Parataxis and Hypotaxis.
  • 4. Collocation. The Classification of Collocations.
  • 5. Sentence. Classification of Sentences according to the Communication Function. Extended and Unextended Sentences. Two-Membered and One-Membered Sentence. Elliptical Sentence. Incomplete Sentence. The Inner Structure of a Sentence.
  • 6. Parts of Sentence. Subject, Predicate, Concord of Subject and Predicate.
  • 7. Secondary Parts of Sentence.
  • 8. Simple Sentence. The Classification of Simple Sentences. Structural Types of Simple Sentences.
  • 9. Compound Sentence (Parataxis). The Classification.
  • 10. Compound Sentence (Hypotaxis). The Classification.
  • 11. Asyndetic Compound Sentence, the Problem of Their Classification.
  • 12. The Word Order in Russian.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific texts, proceeding from diverse registers.
Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts.
Assessment methods
The exam has two parts (written and oral). The written part includes the translation of Russian text into Czech and the Czech into Russian. The oral exam consists of reading, translating, syntactic analyses of the text extract and the answer on theoretical questions. The emphasis is put on the good knowledge of syntactic theory that is demonstrated on certain language material.
