Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theoretical and legal foundations of archaeological heritage care. First, the beginnings of archaeological heritage care in Europe will be presented, which will acquaint students with the circumstances that led to the emergence of conservation in selected European countries. Subsequently, the course will be focused on the reasons why society protects archaeological monuments (the so-called public interest) and what tools it uses for this purpose. Different approaches to the definition, protection and accessibility of archaeological heritage will be discussed. Finally, attention will be focused on the development of international haeritage care, especially in armed conflicts and illegal trade in archaeological finds.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
to determine and describe the basic aspects of the development of archaeological heritage care in Europe;
to define the goals and significance of archaeological heritage care for both the professional and the lay public;
perceive the differences between the archaeological and legal perspectives on heritage care;
compare and highlight the differences in the protection of archaeological heritage in the Czech Republic and the European states;
identify risks threatening elements of the archaeological heritage at different moments of its protection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Before the establishment of heritage care. Common features of the emergence of heritage care in European countries.
  • 2. The emergence of heritage care in Europe on the example of Italy, Greece and Austria-Hungary (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria).
  • 3. Social interest and public right of access to archaeological heritage. Who owns the archaeological heritage? Basic principles of protection (maintenance, access, integrity).
  • 4. Definition and values of archaeological finds. What is the object of research and what is protected?
  • 5. Legal protection of archaeological heritage - Entities and their rights and obligations.
  • 6. Legal and illegal activity of the public. Subsistence looting.
  • 7. Storage and presentation of movable archaeological finds. Private collections and amnesty for handover of archaeological finds.
  • 8. Immovable archaeological finds - ownership, care and territorial protection. Thought Experiment - The Ship of Theseus.
  • 9. Results of archaeological research – find reports, publications, excursions. How to satisfy and stimulate social (public) interest?
  • 10. International archaeological preservation. Archaeological heritage in armed conflicts.
  • 11. Export, import and repatriation of archaeological finds. Universal museums.
  • 12. Presentation of seminar papers.

Teaching methods
Lectures with discussion, interactive syllabus, reading
Assessment methods
The student prepares in writing and submits a work of 4-8 standard pages on a sub-topic within the course, which he chooses himself, at least one week before the set deadline. He must be able to present this work during the credit meeting at the last seminar. After fulfilling the prescribed conditions, he will receive a credit. The work can be done in pairs.
