- Course objectives
- - Improving students' practical stylistic skills in Czech (for translating from English into Czech).
- Developing a contrastive awareness of stylistic preferences of English and Czech (in general and also with respect to genre) and an ability to apply this in stylizing a natural-flowing Czech text.
- Training students' attention to copyediting, stylistic editing, structural editing and content editing.
- Training students' practical skills in revising their own translation.
- Training students' practical skills in editing Czech texts by others. - Learning outcomes
- By concluding the course, the students will acquire:
- Improved practical stylistic skills in Czech (for translating from English into Czech).
- A contrastive awareness of stylistic preferences of English and Czech (in general and also with respect to genre) and an ability to apply this in stylizing a natural-flowing Czech text.
- Practical skills in copyediting, stylistic editing, structural editing and content editing.
- Practical skills and efficiency in revising one's own translation.
- Practical skills and efficiency in editing Czech texts by other authors/translators. - Syllabus
- (1)Types of editing, single edits, combined edits. How to achieve efficiency in revising and editing.
- (2) Editing a vocative text. Functional criteria.
- (3) Editing an informative text. Functional criteria.
- (4) Editing an argumentative text.
- (5) Editing news and journalistic writing. Avoiding clichés.
- (6) Nominal tendencies in English vs. verbal tendencies in Czech - a semantic perspective.
- (7) Editing interference from translation from English.
- (8) Content and structural editing - practical exercise.
- (9) Editing a culturally loaded translation.
- (10) Working with a stylistically accomplished academic text.
- (11) Editing syntax - tips and tricks.
- (12) Stylistic drills; avoiding making frequent mistakes.
