Course objectives
Students will learn about the development of Latvian literature from the late 19th century to the present. They will be given a list of literary works to read and to practise their ability to analyse them as literary works in a developmental and contemporary cultural context.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
identify and summarize the important features of the main periods of development of Latvian literature;
list the most important works of the most important Latvian authors, describe them and identify their genre affiliation.
Syllabus
  • 1. Nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century romanticism and neoromanticism. Poruks, Skalbe, Aspazija, Rainis.
  • 2. Modern trends until 1918 (decadence, symbolism, impressionism). Virza, Akuraters, Jaunsudrabiņš.
  • 3. Realism until 1918. Blaumanis, Brigadere, Upīts.
  • 4. Modern prose of the twenties and thirties. Ezeriņš, Ādamsons, Upīts, Lācis.
  • 5. Interwar avant-garde in poetry (expressionism, futurism, imagism). Čaks, Sudrabkalns, Skujiņa.
  • 6. Literary positivism in the Ulmanis' times. Literature during the German occupation. Virza, Veselis, Grīns.
  • 7. Literature in exile, traditionalism and modernism. Hell´s Kitchen, Eglītis, Zīverts.
  • 8. The period of socialist realism. Upīts, Lācis, Sudrabkalns.
  • 9. Poetry in the sixties and eighties of the twentieth century. Vācietis, Ziedonis, Belševica, Čaklais, Zālīte.
  • 10. The prose in the sixties and eighties of the twentieth century. Bels, Ezera, Zariņš, Skujiņš.
  • 11. Poetry after the restoration of the independent state. Skujenieks, Bērziņš, Langa, Vērdiņš.
  • 12. The prose after the restoration of the independent state. Repše, Ikstena, Ābele, Bankovskis, Kalniete.

Assessment methods
Written test, exam. For the final test, you must read at least two works from before 1940, two from 1940-1990, and two published after 1990. You must also demonstrate the ability to analyse works of Latvian literature in a developmental and contemporary cultural context.
