- Course objectives
- Course, oriented both theoretically and practically, will consider possible different attitudes to translation of literature. We will deal with specific problems of translation of local names and realia, slang etc. Course will also provide introduction to the publishing business: how to contact the author of the original text, how to obtain royalties, how to find a publisher, how to edit the translated text etc.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to describe some translatory procedures, regarding mainly prose, construct and evaluate relevant differences between Finnish and Czech to manage an adequate translation, and to avoid the typical translatory mistakes. Students should be able to translate chosen literary text - short story, extract from the novel etc. and, if possible, publish it, for example in a literary journal.
- Syllabus
- The cours will take place once in two weeks, each unit consists of four teaching hours. Each unit combines theoretical and practical part. We shall start from basic rules for beginning translators and later on deal with some special topics. In practical part, we will translate various literary texts.

- Teaching methods
- Course is organized as workshop, where students are translating (in the class or at home), and teacher comments their translation. Possible solutions, pros and cons of different solutions are discussed. Unacceptable solutions and translatory errors are pointed out.
- Assessment methods
- The course is finished by written examination, translation of literary text, of about 3 600 characters.
