This course is intended for full-time students (in their SECOND AND HIGHER semesters) who have an intermediate/upper-intermediate knowledge of English. An exemption to study the course CJVA2B can be exceptionally granted to the part-time students who apply for it should the capacity of the seminar groups allow. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- The course aims at achieving the B2 level (based on the Common European Framework of Reference) of English language competence. At the end of this course students should be able to understand the main ideas of relatively complex texts on both concrete and academic/professional topics, including discussions in their field of specialisation. Students should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They should be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of academic/professional subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the students will be able to: - give a short presentation dealing with topic related to their studies and discuss the topic - write an abstract of their presentation - ask questions about academic presentations in various disciplines - write a short argumentative essay based on an academic text.
- Syllabus
- 1. Academic orientation: academic vs subject specific vs general English vocabulary; formality and appropriateness in English in an academic context 2. Learning (academic) English: most common mistakes, mother tongue interference, accents 3. Summarising: identifying the main idea and purpose of a short academic text/ an article 4. Writing abstracts: a summary vs an abstract; an article/written text abstract vs presentation abstract 5. Critical thinking, adopting a stance: balanced argumentation 6. Critical thinking, adopting a stance: persuasive argumentation 7. Working with sources; referencing and citation: using reporting verbs, paraphrasing, quoting, working with different citation systems, compiling a reference/bibliography list 8. Essay writing: thesis statement, topic sentences 9. Summary and response essay writing: attributing the source, presenting the source author’s idea(s), introducing the student’s response, making claims, providing supportive evidence 10. Describing images, referring to images in academic context 11. Preparing an academic presentation 12. Delivering an academic presentation 13. Taking part in a discussion – offering meaningful questions, providing response, moving a discussion forward, turn-taking

- Teaching methods
- Mini-presentations prepared by students, projects, discussions in class, reading assignments, analysis of language samples of given genres and in given context.
- Assessment methods
- The course requires attending seminars and completion of ongoing tasks. The course ends with exam tasks at level B2 according to CEFR. The exam verifies the ability to understand and summarize academic texts, the ability to write an abstract and an essay, give a presentation and lead a discussion.
