This course is for students from the Faculty of Arts. Previous knowledge from secondary school is required. The aim of the course is to achieve a B2 level (based on CEFR).

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to achieve a B2 level (based on CEFR) and to become acquainted with academic and specific language. During the course all language skills will be practised (listening, reading comprehension, oral and written presentations). Other material is used - authentic texts.
Students should understand the main ideas of relatively complex text on both concrete and academic/professional topics, including discussions in their field of specialisation;
Listening: can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar;
Reading: can read academic/professional texts without great difficulty;
Spoken interaction: can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible;
Written interaction: can write formal and informal letters, emails, applications and cover letters.
Spoken production: can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of academic/professional subjects related to their field of study and interest;
Written production: can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their field of study and interest;
Grammar accuracy: shows a relatively high degree of grammatical control; does not make errors which cause misunderstanding, and can correct most of their mistakes; can also use some complex sentence forms.
Learning outcomes
Students are able to:
can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of academic/professional subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
listening - can understand most media news and current affairs programmes.
reading - can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt a particular stance or viewpoint.
spoken interaction - can take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining their views.
Written interaction – can write letters, a short academic text, summary, and resume passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
Spoken production - can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Grammar and language fluency: can produce stretches of language with a fairly even tempo; although they can be hesitant as they search for patterns and expressions, there are few noticeably long pauses.
Coherence: can use a limited number of cohesive devices to link their utterances into clear, coherent discourse, though there may be some short pauses in a long contribution.

Teaching methods
One two-lesson seminar every week. Regular practical training of oral and written knowledge. Additional practice. Widening the lexicon – translations, discussions. Deepening the knowledge of realia – by a form of a paper.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an oral examination (presentation on a specified topic + discussion). The exam requires the completion of the following compulsory tasks: 1) vocabulary work on the topics (assignment for classmates based on the vocabulary on one topic), 2) essay; 3) mind map on the topic + argumentation, 4) lecture on the studied field + resume, keywords, 5) presentation, 6) feedback on the assignment/presentation/essay of a colleague. Active participation in seminars, min 70% completion.

Teacher's information
To complete the course you need:

- 70% participation,

- 100% completion of homework ((assigned in seminars),

- completion of the following mandatory assignments: 1) vocabulary work on ~topics (assignment for classmates based on vocabulary on ~one topic), 2) essay; 3) mind map on ~topic + argumentation, 4) lecture on the studied field + resume, keywords, 5) presentation, 6) feedback on the assignment/presentation/essay of a colleague.

Students in the combined form of study do not have compulsory attendance, they complete the assigned tasks and portfolio assignments on the basis of consultation.

The exam can only be taken during the exam period.

If a student commits an unauthorized act during an exam (i.e., using unauthorized aids, pull-ups, communication devices, taking pictures of tests with cell phones, arguing with other students during an exam), the teacher will stop the exam and assign a classification to IS F or FF, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Recognition information: the course will be recognised for students who have already taken the language exam at another university or faculty while studying a subject related to the one they are currently studying and who have reached level B2 ERR.

The student shall submit evidence of the examination or a certificate of completed and recognised courses/index and a completed application form. Applications are handled by the Russian language supervisor.
