Course objectives
The lecture will present a brief overview of the basic moments in the history of early modern urbanism and town planning. The Emphasis is placed on human perceptual relationship to the surrounding countryside and the urban situation. An important concept of the course is conceptual separation two terms: genius loci and enigma loci. Lecturer emphasizes the concept of enigma, i.e. mystery, which the architect has to deal with buildings function, older buildings in the place and materials. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand the history of urbanism and urban planning theories through key examples during history and will then be alone able to interpret the relationship between man and architecture in other places.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to identify and summarize the basic moments in the history of early modern urbanism.
Syllabus
  • 1. Genius loci vs Enigma loci (urbanism between urban architecture, art history and sociology - the model of "sociology of seeing"). & Architecture, utopia and Day of festival (anthropomorphism in architecture, Vitruvian emblem - "aspetto" versus "prospetto").
  • 2. Sensualisation of the landscape and place (palazzo and villa - their performing integration in the landscape of Tuscany) - The rationalization of nature in the city (Roman villa) and enigma loci (Palladio).
  • 3. Biaggio Rossetti: first European city planner - Filarete - Leonardo.
  • 4. Sabbionetta - The sacred forest in Bomarzo (Mannerist memoria, "secret" garden and Studiolo).
  • 5. Shadow skiagraphy and architecture as a place of miracles (Vinzenz Scamozzi, thaumaturgical and sanitation in architecture). & The concept of the landscape in the Baroque: path, direction and focus (Rome, Paris).
  • 6. Castle and the Area around the Castle (urban "spirit system" in the Baroque period).
  • 7. Enlightenment: the sentimental "journey" and a rational structure.
  • 8. "Ringstrasse" and "boulevard" (urban Vienna and Paris, after half of the 19th century, or, "have you enough troops of soldiers?"). & 19th century European city = meaningful expectations.
  • 9. "The bombers are the best planners" (Utopia and Reality in the functionalist town planning).
  • 10. Garden City - "Disappearing City".
  • 11. Circles in Otterloo (Aldo van Eyck: "Space and time will mean a lot - place and moment of forms are much more"). & Lessons from Las Vegas and the "delirious New York" (or Mies van der Rohe: Less is more, Robert Venturi and Rem Koolhas: less is bore).
  • 12. The unfinished plans of the city Brno (Brno from the "balcony" over organic city plan of Královo Pole. & Final colloquium.
