Interest to acquaint with languages of the second important language family of Europe, predominantly of agglutinative structure.

Course objectives
Purpose of the course is to present all Fenno-Ugric languages, plus their closest relatives, Samoyedic languages, i.e. the complete Uralic family. Students should be acquainted with a survey of all Fenno-Ugric languages and their grammatical structures.
Learning outcomes
The student will acquaint with grammatical structure of the non-Indo-European languages of Northeast Europe, predominantly of agglutinative typology.

  • 0. History of research of the Fenno-Ugric languages. 1. Survey of the Uralic languages: 1.1. Laponské: jižní, Lule, severní, Inari, Skolt, Kildin. 1.2. Balto-Fennic Finnish, Karelian, Olonets, Veps, Lude, Livonian, Estonian, Ingrian, Votic. 1.3. Mordvinian. 1.4. Mari = Cheremis. 1.5. Permian: Udmurt = Votyak, Komi = Zyryan. 1.6.1. Hungarian; 1.1.6.2. Ob-Ugric: Khanty = Ostyak, Mansi = Vogul. 1.7. Samoyedic: 1.7.1. North: Nenets = Yurak, Enets = Yenissei-Samoyedic, Nganasan = Tavgy; 1.7.2. Selkup = Samoyed-Ostyak; 1.7.3. Kamasin; 1.7.4. Sayan-Samoyedic: Mator, Taigi, Karagaský, Koybalsan. 2. Sketsch of the historical phonology of the Fenno-Ugric languages. 3. Sketch of historical morphology of the Fenno-Ugric languages.

Teaching methods
Teacher introduces the most important facts about all Fenno-Ugric and Samoyedic populations. Students presents their own descriptions of individual languages.
Assessment methods
Presentation of the grammatical structure of a chosen Uralic language and its written description.
