- Course objectives
- The lectures and seminars present a selected period of early modern literature in German (baroque, enlightenment, Weimar classicism, romanticism, realism, etc.), or one of their essential aspects (eg minnesang, volksbuch, etc.). Therefore, not each of these periods will be discussed, but only one, aiming at conveying students a differentiated, diverse view of this period / its selected aspect.
The lecture part of the course is a series of lectures given by various lecturers, aiming at thematic and methodological polyphony. In the seminar section, discussions about (pre-read) paradigmatic texts related to the lecture are held.
The objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge about a certain formation of German literary history (period, genre, theme, aesthetics, medium, etc.), not neglecting the "created", complex and often contradictory nature of that period, genre or theme. This approach also corresponds to the concept of the literary part of the bachelor's examination, which is not a cursory overview of periods. Students who have passed the series of courses in literary history (except for Chapters II, NJI_14, also Chapters I, NJI_10, and Chapters III, NJI_17) have the option of profiling in the literature part of the bachelor's examination, where they, however, must demonstrate a more specific, more plastic knowledge of the area they have specialized in. - Learning outcomes
- After completing the course students will:
- be able to explain basic period, genre, aesthetic and thematic concepts of a literary period or formation and will be able to present them based on the example of specific texts,
- will have an idea of the alternative concepts of a given period or formation based on their reception in German literary critism,
- will be able to understand the paradigm of important representatives / texts of the period,
- learn how to process other formations in literary history by themselves, so as to capture the links between its universals (genres, themes, typical representatives) and specific texts. - Syllabus

- Literary sociology of the epoch, literary communication, literary institutions.
- Paradigmatic texts and authors.
- The concept of the epoch in (older) German literary criticism, movements in the canon of the period.
- Reading texts / snippets relating to a given literary formation, case interpretations.
