- The student is able to read texts in Czech and English critically. The lessons are held in Czech (the final project and assignments could be written in Czech, Slovak and English). However, students from other fields are also welcome. Course capacity is limited.

- Course objectives
- Cultural studies are an interdisciplinary field of study interested in the relationship between culture and society, often crossing the boundaries of disciplines and not despising pop culture. They are interested in cultural phenomena in the broad sense of this word, their functioning, features and meanings that ideologically affected and affecting. Digital media are an integral part of society. They began as forms of resistance, as a subcultural movement between geeks and scientists, until they became part of the mainstream and developed Fiske's vision of an active audience through Jenkins' convergent culture. For digital media research (hence digital art), it is unnecessary to use only the apparatus of art history but to grind into empirical research. The course aims to inspire students in possible new topics and theories to help students grounded theoretically and methodologically in their empirical research in interactive media.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the fundamental approaches of Cultural Studies;
- apply selected theoretical and methodological approaches of Cultural Studies to his/her research project;
- prepare a research design based on the paradigms of Cultural Studies and using appropriate research methods;
- present a research project and defend it by argumentation. - Syllabus
- -Why paradigms matter, and how to prepare qualitative research design?
- -Study of culture and basic concepts of Cultural Studies (ideology, power, subcultures as forms of resistance, pop culture, cultural citizenship).
- -Media content and media audiences (encoding/decoding, ethnographic turn).
- -Produsage and Mash-up culture in the context of cultural convergence.
- -Celebrity and fandom studies as a part of participatory culture.
- -Smart Cities, cultural industries and hegemony.
- -Virtual communities and identity while using virtual ethnography and ethnography.
- -Digital Humanities and big data: how to work with them qualitatively?
- Teaching methods
- The course takes online lectures, group discussions and individual preparation (reading, partial tasks, preparation for the lesson and the final project).
- Assessment methods
- Credits are awarded to students who pass the test and submit the final project. The condition for successful completion of the course is active participation in lectures. In the case of distance learning, the knowledge test and active participation are replaced by two qualified homework assignments.
