Course objectives
The course aims for the students to learn about and experience the practice at secondary schools in the Czech Republic. In the series of Teaching Practice courses the students cooperate with their mentors in schools to gain practical insight into the school reality and develop professionally as teachers of English as a foreign language. To experience the diverse reality of the Czech educational system, students realize the three courses (Teaching Practice 1, 2 and 3) at a minimum of 2 different schools.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- formulate aims and objectives of an English language lesson - identify parts of an English language lesson and evaluate activities appropriate for the individual parts and aims;
- observe and evaluate particular aspects of a lesson, such as classroom management, interaction patterns, staging of a systems and skills parts of lessons;
- work with a lesson plan;
- cooperate with a mentor in school;
Syllabus
  • Students participate in external teaching at a selected secondary school. The number of hours to be spent at the school and their distribution according to individual activities are stated here: https://www.phil.muni.cz/student/pedagogicke-praxe Students arrange their teaching practice in accordance with the information given here: https://www.phil.muni.cz/student/pedagogicke-praxe Students realize their practice during the teaching period of the semester. Students start their practice only after: 1. The administrative process of the practice arrangement is completed. 2. The semester introductory meeting at the department (this is realized in connection to the corresponding Reflective Seminar)

Assessment methods
To pass the course the students are required to: 1. Contact their mentor within one week of receiving the contact details. 2. Discuss their professional development plan and aims with their mentor at the beginning and during the practice. 3. Spend the required number of hours in school doing the activities described at the official website https://www.phil.muni.cz/student/pedagogicke-praxe/pokyny-pro-studujici#praxe2 and strive for the maximum development of the students whose education they contribute to during the teaching practice. 4. Cooperate with the mentor, and show maximum flexibility on the student's part. 5. Demonstrate professionalism (responsibility, punctuality, preparation, adhering to the rules of the school). 6. Strive for their professional development. Based on the evidence in their reflective diary and portfolio, students continuously evaluate their professional development with the help of their mentor. At the end of the teaching practice, students fill out the self-reflection instrument based on continuous evaluation. 7. Submit required documents by the date set for the particular semester in Homework vaults in IS. 8. Contact the manager of the teaching practice and the university lecturer immediately in case when any problems or barriers during the teaching practice occur.
