Course objectives
After completing this seminar, the student will have a deeper and broader knowledge of how to approach reading and writing scientific texts consciously. Absorption of the scientific text's content will be a common practice for him. He will be familiar with the standard genres of scientific activity (annotation, abstract, summary, review, etc.) and can create them himself. He can use the acquired knowledge about different citation styles in his professional text. Last but not least, he is informed about various citation standards.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- will be able to explain contents of scientific text;
- formulate main ideas of a scientific text in variuos written forms (annotation, abstract, summary, review etc.);
- write a shorter scientific paper meeting the requirements for a scientific text with respect to contents, form and citation ethics.
Syllabus
  • This course has been primarily conceived for first year students of baltistics and puts mind to methodology of professional academic reading and writing. The basic goal of this course is to expand and deepen students' knowledge and skills in ​​conscious and consistent work with scientific text.
  • 1. Types of scientific texts: What genres can be encountered in scientific work? What are they for? What are their distinguishing features? How can such text be created and used?
  • 2. Citation styles: Which citation styles are most commonly used? How do they differ from each other? How are they appropriately used?
  • 3. Citation standards: Which citation standards are there? What do they have in common? How are they specific?
  • 4. Reading and interpretation of selected scientific texts.
