Course objectives
The seminar is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. Each session will therefore fulfil the following two objectives: 1) to provide basic information about multilingualism and to introduce the specific educational needs of bilingual learners, 2) to lead students to outcomes that they will use in their professional practice. Special emphasis will be placed on familiarising the target group of users of Czech as an inherited language and guiding them towards literacy. On the basis of an analysis of the educational needs of these learners, the seminarians will be guided under the supervision of the teacher to formulate basic teaching practices that differ from both the presentation of Czech for monolingual learners and the presentation of Czech for foreigners. The seminar is especially suitable for students of various linguistic and pedagogical disciplines.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student: -gain an orientation in the basic concepts and theories of multilingualism; -know the different perspectives on multilingualism; -understand the different profiles of plurilingual users; -understand the different ways and possibilities of plurilingual education in a plurilingual family; -will have a better perception of the difficulties experienced by a person with a different mother tongue in a foreign language environment; -will be familiar with the laws relating to the education of plurilingual pupils, especially long-term foreign pupils and pupils in foreign schools in the country; -will be familiar with the basic institutions abroad that are dedicated to the basic education of pupils with Czech as an inherited language; will understand the linguistic situation of Czech and half-Czech families in different parts of the world; -will be able to perceive the different practices in the teaching of monolingual pupils / pupils with Czech as a foreign language / pupils with Czech as an inherited language, -will be able to adapt their teaching to pupils with plurilingual profiles.

  • Terminology, different perspectives on plurilingualism; typology of bilingualism and myths associated with bilingualism; plurilingual families; bilingualism in the family; "family language policy"; literacy and "biliteracy"; monolingual society and its approach to plurilingual speakers; compulsory schooling in Section 38 of the Education Act; Czech schools abroad and international schools in the Czech Republic and Czech language teaching in these institutions; adaptation of Czech language teaching to the needs of plurilingual pupils / plurilingual groups / groups with plurilingual pupils; sense of belonging and influence on intelligence; education for dual citizenship

Teaching methods
Lecture parts in the seminar, literature study, discussion, student presentations.
Assessment methods
Regular attendance at seminars, active participation in seminar work, and regular completion of assignments are required for successful completion of the course. The course ends with a colloquium verifying the information acquired in the seminar.

Linguists living abroad and bloggers in the field of plurilingual education will be featured as guests in the seminar this semester. The course is taught annually. Classes are taught online every other week in four-hour blocks. The final session is conducted in person.
