Course objectives
The course will introduce key moments and periods in the development of linguistics from antiquity to the present.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- summarize the important features of the main periods in the history of linguistics;
- explain the relationship between historical knowledge of language and the historical context;
- critically evaluate the contributions and limitations of different linguistic schools

  • Antiquity
  • Interest in language in the Middle Ages
  • Linguistics from the end of the Middle Ages to the 18th century
  • Main trends in linguistics in the 19th century
  • Structuralism
  • Linguistics of the first half of the 20th century in the USA
  • Generative grammar and its developmental stages
  • Speech act theory, the communicative-pragmatic turn in  linguistics, discourse analysis
  • Psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics
  • Cognitive linguistics
