Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the basic features of European historical development after World War II and characterize the differences between the development of classical religious systems (Christian churches) and the so-called political religions (nationalism, fascism, communism).
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course, the student will be able to:
- distinguish phenomena of classical religions and political religions,
- describe basic religious trends after World War II in Europe,
- understand current scholarly discussion of the issues.

  • Events in post-war Europe related to religious history.
  • Specifics of central Europe and post-war Czechoslovakia.
  • Christian churches in Europe and their development related to politics.
  • Christian churches and communism.
  • Features of totalitarian rule, building a new society and a new man.
  • Current scholarly discussion of the issues of totalitarianism and political religions.
