- Course objectives
- Students will be acquainted with the specificities of vocal and instrumental polyphonies in the renaissance and baroque music. Basic techniques: imitation, proportion, modality etc. Basic forms: canon, motet, madrigal, passacaglia, fugue etc.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to recognize basic building means such as imitation, proportions, modalities, etc. They also get acquainted with the musical ones the forms in which they were used - canon, moteto, madrigal, passacaglia, fuga etc.

- Introduction to counterpoint: basic terminology
- Prerequisites: intervals and modes - their classification
- Techniques of the cantus firmus: 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 3:1, 6:1 and syncopic counterpoint
- Imitation techniques: typology
- Contrapuntal figures
- Instrumental techniques: free and reversed counterpoint
- Fugue - analysis and exemplification of the techniques
