Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the text of Latin Bible with the help of concordances (both electronic and printed), thus making them competent to understand the text of the Vulgate.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have good orientation in the sequence of individual biblical books and will understand the genesis of the Latin Vulgate. They will be able to understand, translate into Czech and interpret selected passages from the Bible.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, the canon of biblical texts
  • 2. Hieronymus’ translation of the Bible.
  • 3. Vetus Latina.
  • 4. Relevant electronic databases (BibleWorks, BibleWindows).
  • 5. Working with Bible concordances.
  • 6.-8. Reading of selected passages from the New Testament (Gospels, Actus, Epistles).
  • 9.-10. The Old Testament (Historical Books, Psalms and Writings).
  • 11.-12. Apocryphal Books.
  • 13. Czech translations of the Bible and biblical apocrypha.
