- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to inform the beginners in philology with the place of linguistics in the system of humanities, to give a general characteristics of language as the subject of linguistics, to provide a survey of basic liguistic terminology, and to make the students familiar with the fundamentals of individual linguistic disciplines.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the students will be able:
- to define the subject of study of linguistics;
- to explain the main linguistic terminology;
- to determine partial linguistic disciplines as well as the contents of them;
- to apply this knowledge in the study of ancient and modern languages;
- to explain acquired knowledge in wider contexts. - Syllabus
- 1. The place of linguistics in the system of sciences;
- 2. the sign quality and the systematic nature of language;
- 3. phonetics and phonology;
- 4. morphology, grammatical categories;
- 5. syntax;
- 6. lexicology and semantics;
- 7. stylistics;
- 8. languages of the world;
- 9. Indo-European languages;
- 10. development of language, diachronic linguistics;
- 11. etymology;
- 12. linguistic typology;
- 13. summary.
