Course objectives
The main objective of this course is to get students acquainted with the dialectal varieties of contemporary Greek that exist in Greece and Cyprus alongside Standard Modern Greek. A systematic presentation of the Modern Greek dialects, including Cypriot Greek, will be given, with special focus on the use of these dialects in written discourse (prose, poetry) and in the public domain (media, press, film). The students will be introduced to the main morpho-syntactic and lexical specifics of individual dialects, especially those that differ significantly from the Standard Modern Greek and place considerable demands on translators.
Learning outcomes
After the course completion, students:
- are acquainted with the dialectal situation in contemporary Greece and Cyprus;
- know the basic dialectal varieties of contemporary Modern Greek;
- can define the difference between a dialect and a standard variety;
- recognise the basic morphosyntactic and lexical distinctive features of the Modern Greek dialects and are able to apply this competence in the translation of simple dialectal texts in written or spoken form
- are thoroughly acquainted with dialect translation tools (dictionaries, language atlases, online resources)
