Course objectives
The course focuses on the basic lexicological, lexicographical and morphological concepts and terms. A word as a lexical unit, lexical fund as a system and relations, the levels of words within it. The students become familiar with various types of dictionaries – one language dictionaries, translational dictionaries, onomasiological, semasiological, specialized in a certain kind of vocabulary – slang, phraseology, etc. The seminar topics are related to the frequency of the particular vocabulary and orthographic, lexical and stylistic variants are also considered. Homonymy is differentiated from polysemy, students learn new vocabulary thanks to the given examples, they learn to work with synonyms, antonyms, and also learn a number of new phrases and colloquial expressions.
