- Course objectives
- The main aim of the subject is to introduce students into the issue of crisis and crisis intervention and to streghten the professional skills of a conselor in the context of psychological and social crisis help. The subject follows the knowledge in basic psychological disciplines. Students learn about the objectives and methods of the crises intervention in the broad spectrum of life crises, on crises rising from sudden traumatizing stress (CAN syndrom, rape, PTSD), crises from expected changes in life (tranzistorical), crises rising from personality, situational crises and so-called psychiatric importunatenesses (addictions, drugs, sucidial behaviour etc.). The students are being familiarized with the aims and means of crisis intervention for the solution of individual types of crises and they individualy, within the seminars, are looking for interventions and offre solutions.
- Learning outcomes
- Students:
• will know the key concepts related to crisis situations,
• will be able to identify and distinguish different types of crises,
• will learn to determine and describe various forms of crisis intervention,
• will acquire basic procedures for managing crises and will be able to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems,
• will develop the skill of quickly orienting themselves when providing crisis support. - Syllabus
- • Definition of Basic Concepts – the concept of crisis, causes of crisis, typology of crises, phases of crisis, crisis resolution, crisis coping, coping strategies, pathological course of crisis, defense mechanisms.
- • Crisis resolution, forms of assistance, help and control, professional crisis assistance – crisis intervention and crisis counseling.
- • Basic principles of crisis assistance, goals, forms.
- • Crisis intervention, basic procedures and techniques: preparation for consultation, working with the client and their story. Conclusion of the consultation.
- • Conversation. Expectations and the request for help, techniques of guidance and leadership, techniques of effective communication.
- • Specific Topics in Crisis Intervention: crises resulting from expected life changes; developmental crises: stages of psychosocial development according to E. H. Erikson. Family life cycle, marital crises, crisis situations in the lives of women and men, midlife crisis, crises in puberty and adolescence, crises in old age. Intervention and forms of professional assistance.
- • Maturity crises. Crises of meaning and values.
- • Specific Topics in Crisis Intervention: crises arising from sudden traumatic stress. Acute stress reaction – intervention in acute stress reaction. Post-traumatic stress disorder – forms of professional assistance. Trauma – working with trauma.
- • Specific Topics in Crisis Intervention: crises in the context of psychopathology. Drug addiction and crisis – possible forms of professional assistance. Suicidal issues – intervention in suicidal risk situations. Eating disorders – possible forms of professional assistance. Issues of abuse and maltreatment, domestic violence – possible forms of professional assistance.

- Teaching methods
- Seminars. Most teaching sessions take place in the form of group work, with an emphasis on discussion and working with case studies. Active student participation is expected, supported by the study of professional literature and the completion of assignments. Excursion.
To complete the course, a workload of **125 hours (5 credits)** is expected:
**30 hours** – participation in classes
**35 hours** – reading professional literature, independent study, systematic preparation for seminars
**30 hours** – independent case study analysis
**30 hours** – preparation of a seminar presentation - Assessment methods
- Requirements for Course Credit: Minimum 75% attendance in classes, active participation in seminars, systematic and regular preparation for seminars according to the instructor's guidelines, preparation and discussion of a real case study solution, development of a presentation on crisis and crisis intervention, and its delivery.
