- Course objectives
- This course is designed to clarify the basic concepts of classical genetics. By the end of this course, students will be able to understand the basic principles of genetics at all organismal levels, be able to explain the applications of genetics and methods used in medicine, plant and animal breeding, and be able to take follow-up specialized courses.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students will be able - to understand the basic principles of genetics and cytogenetics - be able to explain the applications of genetics and methods used - to complete follow-up specialised courses.
- Syllabus
- 1. History of genetics. Basic concepts. Origin and development of Mendelian genetics. 2. Discoveries of J.G. Mendel. The principle of segregation and combination. 3. Gene interactions. 4. Mendelian principles in human genetics. 5. Genetic information and sex of organisms, Chromosomal and genotypic sex determination. Inheritance of sex-linked genes. 6. Gene linkage. 7. Recombination mapping. 8. Gene mutations, physical and chemical mutagens. 9. Basics of cytogenetics, chromosome microstructure, karyotypes. 10. Aneuplodies in humans 11. Changes in chromosome structure. 12. Genetic basis of quantitative traits and their analysis, basics of population genetics.
