Course objectives
The goal of the course is to gain information about possible use of animals in scientific experiments in agreement with national law.
Learning outcomes
Students will know information about laboratory animals and about experiments on animals. They will gain knowledge about law defining the possible use of animals in experiments.
Syllabus
  • History of animal experiments, System of animal protection in Czech Republic, Ethical and economical aspects of animal experiments, 3R principle;
  • Experimental models: laboratory animals, alternative models, Factors affecting animal welfare, Experimental animals in Czech Republic, Experiments on farm animals and free living animals;
  • Genetics of laboratory animals (inbreeding, congenic strains, GMO strains), SPF a barrier husbandry;
  • Biology and physiology of laboratory animals;
  • Diseases of laboratory animals and diagnostic methods, Zoohygiene;
  • Experimental procedures with laboratory animals (basic manipulation, sampling, administration, anesthesia, euthanasia);
  • Animal models of human diseases, Humanized mice;
  • Law defining the use of animals in experiments;
  • Animal experiment proposal.
