Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
explain mechanisms of microbial activity in different kinds of environment (soil, water, air, extreme environment);
correlate anthropogenic activities and microbial communities;
describe biotechnological applications of microorganisms;
compare various methods of environmental microbiology.

  • Introduction in environmental microbiology; Microorganisms in the environment (viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa); Terrestrial environments; Aeromicrobiology; Aquatic environments; Extreme environments; Biogeochemical cycles and their influence on the environment; Biodeterioration; Microorganisms and organic pollutants; Microorganisms and anorganic pollutants; Microorganisms in sewage treatment; Microorganisms in agriculture; Methods of environmental microbiology (microskopic, physiological, imunological, DNA-based); Environmental sample processing; Indicator microorganisms;
