- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to provide an overview of the basic chemical disciplines and calculations that should be safely known in the further study of environmental chemistry.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to understand basic chemical calculations, and apply them in tasks related to environmental chemistry and other environmental sciences.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction. Unit conversion.
- 2) Amount of substance, its definition, formulation and use. Mass and volume.
- 3) Mixtures and their composition. Formulation of concentration: Molarity, molality, mass concentration, ratio. Mixing, diluting, concentrating aqueous solutions.
- 4) Ideal gas law. Gaseous solutions. Partial pressure.
- 5) Chemical equations and their balancing. Limiting reagent.
- 6) Acidity and basicity. pH. Thinking on logaritmic scale. Calculation of pH in aqueous solutions. Strong and weak acids and their salts.
- 7) Equilibrium and its constants. Ka, Ks, pKa, pKs. Distribution diagrams. Buffers.
- 8) Distribution coefficients.
- 9) Thermodynamics. Steady state, comparing the states. Spontaneity, enthalpy, entropy.
- 10) Kinetics. Zero, first, and pseudo-first order processes.
- 11-13) Recapitulation and practice of problematic chapters.
- 14) Final test.

- Teaching methods
- Solving exercises jointly in front of the blackboard, with occasional demonstrative solution.
- Assessment methods
- Credit is given at the end of the semester for either getting at least 50% points from each test during the semester, or at least 50% from the final test. In-term tests take place every other week.
