Course objectives
Mechanics of a particle. Particle kinematics. Particle dynamics. Newton's laws of motion. Inertial and non-inertial frames of reference. Work, energy and power. Universal gravitation. Newton's law of universal gravitation. Mechanics of a system of particles. Mechanics of a rigid body. Rotational dynamics of a rigid body. Elasticity of materials. Hooke's law. Collision of particles. Fluid mechanics. Fluid statics. Fluid dynamics. Internal energy, heat, temperature. The first law of thermodynamics. Kinetic theory of gases. Ideal gas. Maxwellian distribution. Real gases, the Van der Waals equation of state and its isotherms. Work done by a gas. Reversible and irreversible changes. The Carnot cycle.
