- Course objectives
- The course is devoted mainly to the students of the Masters program. The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with groundwater comminants, their properties, ways of remediation of contaminated waters and principles of groundwater protection.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
identify and delineate sources of groundwatwer contamination;
know principle groundwater contaminants and their physico-chemical properties;
understand and estimate transport processes at sites;
interpret multiphase flow;
calculate flow of immiscible fluids;
calculate mass of contaminants in vadose and saturated zone;
know remediation technologies and their advantages;
make decisions of suitability of common remediation technologies at sites (pump and treat, SVE, PRBs, etc.) - Syllabus
- History and progress of the groundwater protection
- contaminants and their properties, sources of contamination
- migration of the contaminants through the saturated and vadose zone - transport processes
- multiphase flow, relative permeability, saturation ratio
- mass balance of contaminants is saturated and vadose zone
