Course objectives
The main goal of the course is to prepare students for systematic work with students in the areas of developing social and emotional skills, creating a supportive school environment and promoting overall mental well-being. The course will be conducted in a workshop format with an emphasis on learners' own training. The course will include several theoretical sessions with practical demonstrations to introduce learners to the issues. This will be followed by team preparation of individual lessons (asynchronously), culminating in lesson implementation and feedback.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: -identify risk factors and predictors of adolescent mental well-being;
- build a psychosocially safe classroom environment;
- work with social-emotional learning (SEL) and personal-social education (PSE) concepts in compliance with RVP;
- effectively set educational goals in the area of personal and social development;
- plan and deliver lessons aimed at developing pupils' competences;
- facilitate lessons and lead reflection on the learning process.
Syllabus
  • Mental health of adolescents: current data from the Czech Republic and the world, predictors of mental health and well-being. Mental health and wellbeing support tools.
  • The role of primary prevention in secondary and high school education. The role of competence development in the context of the RVP.
  • Social-emotional learnig (SEL) framework: introduction of the concept, research findings, foreign and Czech methodologies and examples of good practice. Presentation of the framework of personal-social education (OSE).
  • Tools for creating and maintaining psychosocial safety in the classroom
  • Methodology of preparing and conducting SEL/OSV lessons: setting learning objectives, specifics of facilitation, reflection as a key learning tool for SEL/OSV.
Teaching methods
Group discussion; group training; lecture; home preparation.
Assessment methods
Active participation in the seminar: presenting the SEL/OSV lesson, giving feedback on colleagues' outputs, active participation in discussions. Submission of preparation of one SEL/OSV lesson (teamwork). Methodical commenting on the preparation of another group (individual work).
