Course objectives
To introduce the basics of map semiotics and toponomastics as important tools in social communication of spatial data, information acquisition and new knowledge creation. To present the logic of sign creation, general theory of sign systems and information content to the forms of their expression. Emphasis is placed on the user and utilitarian aspects of sign systems associated with the interpretation, understanding, and differentiation of geographic names, as well as the origin, meaning, and need for standardization of geographic nomenclature. Demonstrate the importance and application of map semiotics and toponomastics in mapmaking.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- undestand basics of theory of map symbols and geographical names;
- apply theoretical knowledge to the practical process of map signs creation;
- Work with toponyms in the process of map making;
