Course objectives
Introduction. Structure of viruses - morphology and chemical composition of viruses, inactivation of viruses. Classification of viruses - criteria of classificationanimal viruses, plant viruses,insect viruses, bacteriophages. Methods of investigations of viruses, cultivation and assay of viruses. The viral multiplication cycle - adsorption, penetration, transcription, translation, replication of viral nucleic acid, morphogenesis. Reproduction of animal viruses. Reproduction of plant viruses. Reproduction of bacteriophages. Viral genetics - mutation, abortive infections and defective viruses, genetic interaction between viruses, interactions between viral gene products, the genetic basis of virulence. Pathogenesis of viral infections - pathogenicity and virulence, routes of entry, mechanisms of spread in the organismus, virus shedding. Host responses to viral infections, antiviral immunological mechanisms, immunization. Chemotherapy of viral diseases - nucleoside analogs, other antiviral agents, strategy for development of antiviral agents. Epidemiology and control of viral infections. Laboratory diagnosis of viral diseases. Viral diseases (assortment).Viruses and biotechnology;
