- Course objectives
- The course "Bioethics" responds to the increasing topicality of research ethics. The main aim of this course is to offer basics of bioethics, its origin, history and methods, as well as to discuss some ethical aspects of experimental biology and related clinical applications. From the methodical poit of view, the course will be focused on the identification of individual ethically relevant aspects of biomedical research and on the critical assessment of different moral viewpoints rather than a determination of the (only) morally right standpoint. In addition, the course is also aimed at ethical standards of research including ethical and legal rules for grant applications. During the whole course, ethical argumantation and reasoning will be shown on concrete real cases. The course is organized as a combination of lectures and seminars. Active participation of the registered students in the discussion group (in the Information System MU), where the individual ethically questionable cases from the research should be discussed. At the end of the course, students should be able to: understand the most important cases in the field of bioethis; interpret possible conflict of interests in each discussed case; identify ethical principles breached in these cases; explain argumentation in each discussed cases; propose possible solutions for each case.

- 1. INTRODUCTION TO BIOETHICS (origin, history and scope of bioethics, methodical approaches) 2. ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION (use of animals in biomedical research, standards for the work with laboratory animals, 3R principle, alternative methods) 3. RESEARCH ON HUMAN SUBJECT (terapeutic and non-therapeutic research, clinical studies, principle of informed consent) 4. RESEARCH ON HUMAN BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL (resources of biological material, identifiable/anonymous samples, transplantations - principle of presumed consent/dissent, DNA samples, biobanking) 5. REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY (principles and methods of assisted reproduction, gamete and embryo donation, surrogate motherhood, age limits, embryo research) 6. CELL TECHNOLOGIES (chimera creation, stem cells, cloning) 7. MEDICAL GENETICS (genetic testing, genetic screening, presymptomatic testing, genetic counseling, accessibility of genetic information) 8. GENETIC DIAGNOSIS BEFORE BIRTH (preimplantation diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, abortions, dysgenics and eugenics) 9. INTERVENTIONS INTO GENOME (transgenosis, genetically modified organisms, gene therapy) 10. INFORMATION ACCESSIBILITY AND PATENT ISSUES (digital databases, informational privacy, patentability of biological material and living organisms) 11. ETHICS IN SCIENCE (scinetific integrity, authorship, publication rules, reviewing) 12. RESEARCH AND LAW (important documents and legal norms on bioethics, ethical and legal requirements of grant application, ethical commissions and advisory boards)
