- Biology with a view to Education (programme PřF, B-BI)
- General Biology (programme PřF, B-BI)
- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, the students are able to:
work efficiently with light microscope;
prepare hand sectioned plant material as well as other types of microscopic objects;
document their own observations using a scientific drawings and microphotographs and described them;
explain plant structure from cellular to organ level and relate it to the environmental conditions. - Syllabus
- Plant cytology: Plant cell structure and function. The nucleus, plastids. Cytoplasm. Membranes, membrane components of plant cell. Chloroplasts - sites of photosynthesis. Movement in cell. The cell surface: cell wall, apoplasmic space. Intercellular junction. Plasmodesms and symplast.
- Histology: Types of plant cells and tissues. Simple and complex tissues. Tissue systems: meristems, dermal, water-conducting and ground tissues, their structure and functions.
- Organology: Anatomy of flowering plants. Primary structure of vegetative organs - root, stem, leaf. Primary tissues of roots: stele (radial vascular bundle), root cortex, endodermis, rhizodermis. Primary growth of roots, root tip and root cap. Pericycle and production of lateral roots. Root hairs. Primary tissues of stems: primary growth of stems. Terminal bud, shoot tip and leaf primordia. Anatomy of leaf: monofacial and bifacial leaves, mesophyll, epidermis with guard cells, venation. Secondary growth: lateral meristems, vascular and cork cambium. Secondary tissues of stems, heteroxylic and homoxylic secondary xylem. Cork, phelloderm, periderm. Secondary tissues of roots, specific foundation of vascular cambium in root stele. Location of primary and secondary xylem.
