- Course objectives
- After completing this course students gain knowledge on fundamental concepts of remediation of contaminated sites and reclamation of brownfields as well as on reduction of risk from accidents to environment. Students will learn theoretical basis of remediation technologies for cleanup of soil, groundwater and contaminated air and their use in practice. Topics will include physical, chemical, biological and integrated treatment techniques.
- Syllabus
- Course 1: Basic concepts of remediation (biological, chemical, physical and integrated) of contaminated sites, concept definitions, remediation of vadose zone and contaminated aquifers, remediation in-situ and ex-situ, integrated treatment techniques (treatment train), dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNPAL), light non-aqueous phase liquid, organic and inorganic pollutants, source treatment, natural attenuation, enhanced attenuation, phytoremediation, green remediation, pollutants transport in an aquifer, physical and chemical parameters of an aquifer,
- Course 2: Basic concepts of biological treatment (active microorganisms, basics of microbial physiology important for remediation of contaminated sites, enzymes, biological surface active compounds), mass transfer, biofilm, sorption-desorption of pollutant molecules, bioavailability of pollutants, aerobic and anaerobic degradation of pollutants, biotransformation, engineering of remediation technologies, physical remediation techniques (pump & treat, air stripping, air sparging, resistance heating), chemical remediation techniques (in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), chemical reduction, nanoiron, surfactant washing), monitoring and control of remediation, an integrated tool for evaluation of quality of treated materials, determination of treatment efficiency
- Course 3: Biological remediation techniques: bioventing, biosparging, bioslurping - basic concepts, application in full scale. Biological degradation of pollutants ex-situ (soil, construction debris) on decontamination plateaus, landfarming, slurry-phase. Biological remediation technologies for reduction of monoaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes), chlorinated solvents, oil hydrocarbons -basic concepts and full scale application.
- Course 4: Integration of biological remediation methods with another remediation technologies (pump & treat + biological polishing step, pump & treat + air stripping + biological polishing step, ISCO + biological polishing step), natural attenuation, enhanced attenuation, bioimmobilization, biostabilization, surfactant washing and full scale applications Biofiltration of contaminated soil air with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), basic concept of biofiltration, practical use
- Visit at a contaminated site: ERxplanation of basic remediation design, information on remediation techniques applied, information on hydrogeological characteristics of the site, results of remediation
