- At the end of the course students should be able to idenfity skeletal remains (and also fragmentary skeletal material) from archaeological researches.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction with skeletal material.Types of preservation of skeletal material. Demonstration of bone types and bone tissue. Differentiation of adult and children bones. Differentiation of human and animal bones.
- 2. Excavation and retrieval of skeletons. Transport and treatment of bones. Purifying of bones. Sampling for genetic analysis.
- 3.-4. Restoration of skeletal remains. Skull. Newborn skull, adult skull. Sutures. Auditory osscicles. Ossified laryngeal cartilage. Skull orientation. Frankfurt Horizontal.
- 5. Dentition. Tooth identification. Differentiation of permanent and deciduous dentition. Siding.
- 6. Axial skeleton. Backbone.Identification of vertebrae,thorax,ribs, sternum and sacrum. Identification of fragments. Variability. Siding.Differentiation of adult and children bones.
- 7. Bones of the upper limb.Clavicle, scapula,humerus,radius,ulna.Identification of fragments. Variability. Siding.
- 8. Carpals, metacarpals, phalanges. Identification of fragments. Variability. Siding.
