Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to distinguish types of human infections according to the their source (anthroponoses, zoonoses and sapronoses); to understand epidemic process and natural focality of diseases; to identify some haematophagous arthropods (ixodid ticks, insects) as vectors of microbial diseases; and to study the ecology of etiologic agents of diseases transmissible to humans from animals or abiotic environment.

  • Types of human infections according to the source: anthroponoses, zoonoses and sapronoses.
  • Epidemic process.
  • Natural focality of diseases.
  • Emerging infections.
  • Epidemiological surveillance, prevention and control of microbial zoonoses and sapronoses.
  • Haematophagous arthropods (ixodid ticks, insects) as vectors of microbial diseases.
  • Endotherm vertebrates as hosts or reservoirs of microbial zoonoses.
  • A systematic survey of microbial zoonoses and sapronoses.
  • Distribution and ecology of zoonotic viruses.
  • Distribution and ecology of zoonotic rickettsiae.
  • Distribution and ecology of other zoonotic and sapronotic bacteria.
  • Distribution and ecology of zoonotic and sapronotic microfungi.
  • Distribution and ecology of zoonotic and sapronotic protozoa.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures, reading, demonstration of some haematophagous invertebrate vectors, discussion during the lectures.
Assessment methods
Lecture once a week, written test as examination (60 questions with at least 4 potential answers each, only one answer is correct). The criterion for the examination success is at least 50% score points.
