Course objectives
Main objective of this interactive course is to put to students new and real insight into the research management, i.e. leading, planning or financing the research activities, focused on obtaining and using knowledge of intellectual property, transfer of knowledge and technologies from researchers to external parties or technology transfer in general and also possibilities of making the innovative business or spin-off creation during the study or research activities or after their termination.
Syllabus
  • 1. Project Management - Practical piece of knowledge for everyone working on any project: - Project – what is it? General view of the university/investor, grants, etc. - Basic structure of project (academic/non-academic environment) - Role of the team, human resources and team management - Economic aspects of project, administration and accounting – responsibility for the project in general, efficiency, objectives of project, working with outputs of projects.
  • 2. Grant Funding of R&D - Financing of Research and Development (Universities, Academy of Sciences, Research institutions: - Under what conditions and how to finance research? - Finance resources (grants, specific projects, private/public funding) - Availability of finance resources, difficulties with fundraising, efficiency when spending money - Where and how to ask for finance grants (resources in Czech Republic, EU, elsewhere) - Differences in financing basic and applied research.
  • 3. Intellectual Property Protection - Various aspects of intellectual property rights and its protection: - What is an intellectual property (IP) – why and how to protect it - Relations to Research and Development results - Intellectual property and possibilities of universities how to protect it – current situation and basic law enactment.
  • 4. Dealing with Research and Development Outputs - This topic is focused on various possibilities how to deal with R&D results:
  • - Current law and legal conditions for exercise of research outputs - Technology transfer and transfer of know-how - Roles of authors and working compartment in technology transfer process - Ways of support and cooperation with commercial partners during the whole process of dealing with R&D results - providing the results (conditions, types of law contracts, etc.).
  • 5. Commercial Potential Analysis - Methodology for the complex evaluation of invention based on the product-oriented approach. Answer the question 'Is it worth?' - invention brief description, identification of possible product and its benefits - IP landscape analysis - shaping my product according to close patented solutions - critical comparison with competing products - market analysis (size, dynamics, law atc.) - proposition of commercialization strategy
  • 6. Innovative Business Basics of innovative business: - Before starting business (why to carry business, applying ideas, evaluation of abilities, aims) - What to think about in the beginning (product or service, market, time, team) - Factors of environment, competition, SWOT analysis - Business plan and executive summary (mission, vision, aims identification, definition of strategy, critical factors of prosperity) where to gain finance funds for business, what investors want to know, stadium of financing…)
  • 7. Soft Skills - Presentation Skills Practically oriented lesson with work in groups: - preparation of good presentation - what plays the role in presenting and success/fail (body talk, supporting materials, first impression) - elevator pitch (how quickly and effectively take the attention)
  • Lectures 5, 6 a 7 are closely related to each other. Output from these plans will be business plan in the brief version, its revision and feedback to every student.

Teaching methods
Interactive lessons on the individual subjects blending explanations and overviews with discussions and collaborative works.
Assessment methods
The course is based upon the attendance of lectures and consequential seminars by students. Graded credit is required to the completion of a course. Obtaining the graded credit depends on the active attendance of lectures and seminars, completion of a written examination and successful work-out and presentation of business plan, created by student project team.
