Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Introduction to subject of mathematical biology, generally as well as according to the focus of study. Introduction to selected topics of the study field, based both on the fundamentals of their theory and on giving an explanation of some historical events and consequences.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- know basic information on a structure of the chosen study programme in the whole, particular courses and their continuities;
- know important milestones in history of mathematical applications in biology and medicine;
- know some basic approaches used for biological data analysis and their modelling;
- know important scientific interests of the lecturer (for a potential choice of their bachelor project);
- write an essey about their reasons to study the chosen study programme, about their ideas of content of their study and about realizing their potentials after graduating.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses and to study plans of the study branch.
  • 2. Mathematics, biology, mathematical biology, biomathematics.
  • 3. Story of J.G.Mendel. Experiment arrangement, hypothesis, evaluation of results, biostatistics.
  • 4. Mathematical models for demography. Malthus, Euler, Quetelet, Lotka - Voltera.
  • 5. Epidemiological models. Survival analysis.
  • 6. Models of pharmacokinetics.
