- Course objectives
- The course will present the development of world cartography from prehistory to modern cartography and development of the cartography of the Czech historical countries. Examples are presented on the old maps and atlases from the map archive of the Department of Geography.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able to: basic knowledge od development world cartography from prehistory to modern cartography and development cartography of Czech historical countries, be able to operate with old maps and atlases as a source of knowledge, style of cartographic products and documents.
- Syllabus
- 1. Definition of terms as history of cartography, historical cartography, old maps a atlases, historical maps and atlases. - 2. World cartography - prehistory and cartography of primitive nations. - 3. Ancient cartography - ancient East, Egypt, Celestial Empire, India, ancient Greece and Roma. - 4. Medieval cartography - European (including portolan maps), outside European, renascene of cartography. - 5. Modern cartography - epoch of great breaktrough journeys and progress in cartography - chorographical maps, gold age of atlases production, reformation of cartography, cartography of 19th century, international map of the world 1: 1,000,000. - 6. History of cartography in Czech historical countries - the first references about Czech countries in maps, wandere maps in the beginning of Midle Age. - 7. Early separate maps of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and their derivations. - 8. Registries of land and detailed mapping for state purposes to the stable cadaster. - 9. The first, second and third military mapping. - 10. Private cartography of Czech countries from the beginning of 19th century. - 11. Analyse of old maps and loggind of results of their evaluation. - 12. Cartometric surveying in odl maps. - 13. Cartographical informative documents and map funds.
