Prerequisites
The knowledge of classical mechanics and the elementary knowledge of nuclear physics and quantum mechanics is assumed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
At the end of this course student obtains the basic knowledge from nuclear physics necessary to understand the function of nuclear reactors and power stations. The student also obtains the basic knowledge about nuclear fission of heavy nuclei, chain reaction and processes taken place in the reactor. He will have the survey of dosimetry, perspectives and risks of nuclear energetics.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- Understand basic processes in the nucleus of the atom;
- to describe and analyze the importance of individual nuclear reactions to the nuclear fission;
- describe the design and function of the nuclear reactor and its components; - Analyze and explain the nuclear reactor control process;
- Identify risk factors for the operation of nuclear installations;
- explain and apply principles of radiation protection and dosimetry;
- assess and formulate the role of nuclear energy in the energy concept of society;
Syllabus
  • Elementary particles, atomic nuclei. Nuclear reactions and radioactivity. Interaction of particles with matter. Nuclear fission. Chain reaction. Nuclear reactor. Construction of nuclear reactor and power station. Dosimetry. Nuclear energetics, its perspectives and safety.
