- Course objectives
- To prepare students for work with scientific literature, tell them how to cite scientific knowledge, how to writhe scientific manuscripts, including the up to date bachelor thesis. They will be also introduced to the proposals of grant agencies and principles of presentation of their work, both orally and by poster.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the students are able to: retrieve and process information contained in internet journal databases; plan and conduct their experiments; create an experimental protocol; prepare the documentation for scientific publications, especially the bachelor and diploma thesis; write a grant proposal, including the grants supporting the study stay abroad; present outcomes of their work (lecture, poster); present the basic aims of their bachelor thesis, and thus obtain important experience; cite correctly the scientific literature; use the citation manager ZOTERO.
- Syllabus
- 1. Literature search (internet, library, consultations). 2. Planning of original publication (working hypothesis, writing framework). 3. Tips for experimental work (experimental design, well-arranged documentation in laboratory diary). 4. Result data processing (statistics, graphs, significance of results). 5. Comparison of own results with literature (scientific discussion). 6. Personal presentation of results with different audience (lecture, seminar, poster, conference). 7. Principles of bachelor/diploma/doctoral thesis (structure, style, rules). 8. Original scientific paper (structure, style, rules, basic editorial work, selection of most suitable journal). 9. Grant proposal (grant agencies, student support of study stay). 10. Correct scientific Czech/English. 11. Use of computers in aforementioned topics, especially for the literature citations. 12. ZOTERO citation manager.

- Teaching methods
- In agreement with the current measures at the MU, the teaching of this subject in autumn 2020 term will be carried out as a combination of both distant and present form. The students will be informed well in advance about the type of the teaching for each subsequent lesson. In case od need, it is possible to switch to the distant form completely (e.g. MS Teams, IS...).
- Assessment methods
- Oral presentation of the main topic of their bachelor thesis according to the instructions obtained in the course, a written summary of their work presented, and presence at lectures/discussions (attendance 70%). In case of distant education the rules are the same, just all the communication will be held via MS teams.
