Course objectives
A survey of special biotechnological productions. Basic principles of productions. Typical examples.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student will better understand the possibilities of biotechnological production of important substances and making effective fermentative processes.
Syllabus
  • 1. Biotechnology and its relation to the other production processes. Typical features, comparison with chemical processes. Economical aspects.
  • 2. General features of fermentations. Optimization of processes.
  • 3. Vitamins, modes of production. Production of ascorbic acid.
  • 4. Production of carotens, riboflavine, and cobalamine.
  • 5. Aminoacids, producers, biochemical principles of production and accumulation. Lysine and glutamic acid.
  • 6. Therapeutics and important substances in pharmacology. Antibiotics production. Penicillins, stages of development of production process. Semisyntetic penicillins. Tetracyclines.
  • 7. Fermentative production of antimetabolites and other anti-cancer drugs.
  • 8. Dextran, production, use. Other microbial polysaccharides, survey, properties, producers.
  • 9. Transformation of steroids, typical reactions. General features of production, derivatives, application.
  • 10. Organic solvents and other substances used in chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Butanol a acetone, 2,3-butandiol, fenylacetylkarbinol.
  • 11. Industrial enzymes. Producers, influence of cultivation environment.Bacterial and fungal amylases and proteases. Glucose oxidase.
  • 12. Ketonic fermentations, characteristics, metabolites.
  • 13. Production of fats and oils. General features, examples.
  • 14. Microbial insecticides, producing organisms. General and special conditions of production, use. Growth regulators, giberrellins.
