Course objectives
The aim of the course is providing an introduction to geological sciences to the students of the program, inlcluding introduction to the geological time, basic terms from petrology, mineralogy, plate tectonics, Earth geochemistry and its evolution in time.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- understand basic geological terminology;
- describe different methods of measuring geological time;
- describe mechanisms of the origin and evolution of the Solar system and Earth;
- describe the main concepts of plate tectonics, plate boundaries, and the main types of processes that take place on them;
- describe the principles of classification of plutonic and volcanic rocks;
- describe the mechanisms of formation and principles of classification of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks;
- describe the mechanisms of evolution of the Earth's composition over time.
Syllabus
  • 1. Origin of the solar system, Earth and Moon, composition of metorites, geological time. 2. Structure and composition of the Earth 3. Plate tectonics - history, principles, types of boundaries, orogenesis, Wilson cycle, hot spots. 4. Magmatism and igneous rocks - division and classification of plutonic and volcanic rocks. 5. Magmatic rocks and their rock-forming minerals 6. Development of magmas - crystallization and differentiation of melts, Bowen's scheme, trace elements and their distribution, the effect of fluids. 7. Volcanic rocks, processes and tectonic environments. 8. Sedimentary rocks - weathering and its types, transport, sedimentation, diagenesis, classification and division of rocks. Heavy minerals. 9. Metamorphic rocks, factors and manifestations of metamorphism, geothermal gradient, types of metamorphism and manifestations in rocks of different composition. 10. Evolution of Earth's mineralogy - evolution of mineralogical diversity and complexity since the formation of the solar system, changes at the beginning of plate tectonics, the origin of life, oxidation of the atmosphere, orogenic processes.
