Course objectives
The course aims at presenting the recent advances in the knowledge about individual parts of Earth's cryosphere including terrestrial and marine cryospheric components, reasearch methods and reconstruction of past cryospheric conditions and modelling of future behaviour of the cryosphere.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will have the knowledge about:
- present terrestrial and marine cryosphere and its components,
- changes of the cryosphere,
- research methods and techniques used for the study of the cryosphere,
- reconstruction of past cryospheric conditions,
- modelling of future behaviour of the cryosphere.
Syllabus
  • Individual themes
  • 1. Introduction to cryosphere and its components
  • 2. Terrestrial cryosphere, processes and its changes
  • 3. Marine cryosphere, processes and its changes
  • 4. Research methods and techniques for studying the cryosphere (in situ measurements, remote sensing observations)
  • 5. Reconstruction of the past glaciations and modelling of future glacier behaviour on the Earth
Literature
  • basic literature is given to individual topics
Teaching methods
student presentation, class discussion
Assessment methods
A necessary condition for granting of the credit is an active participation in the course in a form of presentation on selected topic.
