Course objectives
Introductory overview course focused on the use of biochemical knowledge in medicine and pharmacy, agriculture, food industry, and other biotechnologies, including ecological aspects of biochemistry.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to orient himself in the possibilities of the application of biochemical knowledge and methods. It will enable the suitable choice of his future professional activity.
Syllabus
  • Introduction
  • Subject of research, place of biochemistry in the system of sciences. History and present.
  • Application of Biochemistry in Medicine and Pharmacy
  • Enzymes as molecular machines and their study using modern separation methods with the use of these methods in the development of new drugs.
  • Interaction of drugs with the organism. Pharmacogenomics.
  • Basics of molecular diagnostics of diseases, hereditary predispositions, neurochemistry.
  • Proteomics and systems biology for classification and therapy of cancer.
  • Multiple roles of carbohydrates. Molecular mechanisms of pathogen-host recognition.
  • Appliaction of biochemistry in analytical methods
  • Biosensors, Immunosensors (bioreceptors, bioconverters).
  • Use of biosensors in practice. Bioelectronics and its use.
  • Application of biochemistry in agriculture
  • Plant biochemistry. Protection against pests and diseases.
  • Increasing production - gene manipulation. Bioremediation.
  • Secondary metabolites.
  • Application of biochemistry in food and raw material processing
  • Nutritional value of food. Functional foods.
  • Biotechnology in metal mining.
  • Environmental biochemistry
  • Earth as a chemical-biochemical reactor - nitrogen cycle.
  • Biochemistry and ecological problems of industrial society. Depletion of resources - production of substances - waste.
  • Biochemistry and waste management (analysis, processing). Central position of liquid waste - wastewater.
  • Pollution by carbon compounds (common, non-toxic), nitrogen, special pollution (toxic and persistent substances).
  • Wastewater treatment methods - chemical, biological. Aerobic and anaerobic processes, technological arrangement.
