- Course objectives
- The course is oriented to chemistry and methods used for conservation-restoration of objects that were made from organic materials, such as paper, wood, leather and textile. Students gain a survey about chemical agents and methods used in this field of care of cultural heritage.

- Syllabus
- WOOD
- Macroscopic structure of wood. Chemical composition. Main and accompanying components of wood. Influence of chemicals on wood.
- Microscopic framework of wood. Anatomic elements of wood coming from coniferous and broad-leave trees.
- Selected physical properties of wood. Surface and outward-form properties of wood. Humidity of wood, influence of humidity changes on wood properties. Density, heat, sound, electric properties of wood.
- Mechanical properties of wood. Elasticity, static fastness, hardness, toughness of wood. Technological properties, variability and modification of wood properties.
- Protection of wood. Abiotic and biotic factors. Constructional, physical and chemical protection of wood.
- LEATHER
- Chemical composition, histology. Collagen and its structure.
- Technology of hide and parchment production. Leather products: cowskin, wellum, sheepskin, goatskin, pigskin, bird, trophy hides and other furrings.
- Deterioration of leather and hide objects - physical, chemical, biological (microorganisms, macroorganisms).
- Conservation procedures for hides and parchment. Disinfection, cleaning (physical, chemical), neutralization, additional tanning, forming and staking, fatting, antimicrobial preparation.
- Conservation of historical vegetable-tanned book bindings, white binding and technical hides. Conservation of historical objects made from hides, particularly from saddler ones. Conservation of archaeological objects made from hides.
- Methods for conservation and restoration of parchment.
- Deposition and storage of treated hide and parchment objects, optimal conditions for deposition (temperature, relative humidity)
- PAPER
- History of production and utilization of paper. Chemical, supramolecular and morphological structure of plant fibers. Physical, mechanical and optical properties. Causes for paper deterioration.
- Preventive care for paper. Characteristics of written memorials from the point of preventive care. Climatic conditions. Deposition systems.
- Conservation and restoration of paper artifacts. Disinfection, cleaning, deacidification, additional gluing, and stabilization of paper. Gluing, repair works, filling-in, and skeletization. Stacking and nipping.
- Method for conservation and restoration of seals. Function, history, shape and size of seals. Seal material.
- Historical recording means. Inks, iron-gallic inks, printing inks. Illuminations and colourings.
- Modern recording means. Fixation of colour layer. Methods for chemical and physical visualization of dilute texts.
- Conservation and restoration of book binding. History and typology of book binding. Restoration of books "in situ". Complex restoration of book block and binding. Conservation and restoration of clips and mountings.
- TEXTILE. Textile – basic concepts. Appearance of textile materials and techniques in art and museum collections. Textile - mobile phenomenon.
- Structure of textile. Textile structure developing line. Natural, chemical and smelting fibres. Microstructure and macrostructure of plant and animal fibres. Determination of fibres.
- Physico-chemical properties of textile. Sorption of humidity, heat, light. Mechanical, optical, electrical, and heat properties.
- Solubility and stability of fibres against chemical and physical effects.
- Textile production, its utilization and maintenance. Textile fibres - shapes and mixtures. Linear fabrics. Area fabrics – principles of their structure. Clothing. Treating.
- Causes for textile deterioration. Irradiation, heat, mechanical straining, swelling, chemical and biological destruction.
- Conservation of textiles. Direct and indirect conservation. Methods of textile survey. Treating of textile artifacts.
