- Course objectives
- This course is to give the students the first touch with the central themes of biophysics. Special attention is paid to the principles of physical methods that are used to study the structure of biopolymers. A second main theme are intermolecular forces and their relationship with macroscopic physical and chemical properties.
Lectured will be also the physical principles of the interactions between radiation and matter, and the application of these interactions on the structural studies of biopolymers.
The student will get acquainted with the structure and basic functions of nucleic acids and proteins, and with the construction and the functions of biomembranes. The student will also learn about the typical problems that biophysical research attempts to solve, and about standard methods that biophysics uses. - Learning outcomes
- After successful passing of this course the students should be able to
- discuss the relationship between constitution and structure of a molecule on one hand and its physical and chemical properties on the other hand
- describe the physical fundaments of the interaction between various forms of radiation and matter and demonstrate its application in spectroscopical methods for molecules structural properties research
