Course objectives
The main aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of practical use of descriptive statistic. At the end of the course student should be able to understand basic statistical methods explained in individual lectures. He/she would be able to explain when to apply different methods and make reasoned decisions about preconditions that are necessary for proper utilization of methods in question. He/she would be able to work with information on data preparation, make deductions based on acquired knowledge concerning statistical methods and properly interpret results
Learning outcomes
Completing the course students will we able:
- to apply exploratory data analysis, decide on data transformation
- to use descriptive statistics to summarize data samples
- to apply general procedure of statistical hypotheses tesing in typical situations of geographical data analysis
- to apply linear regression model for finding solution in typical geographical tasks
Syllabus
  • Introduction to statistics, specific features of geographical data
  • Descriptive statistics I – measures of central tendency, variability, higher order measures
  • Descriptive statistics II– exploratory data analysis, graphical tools
  • Teoretical distributions, probability
  • Point estimation and confidence intervals
  • Hypothesis testing I – basic terms and principles, normality, parametric tests
  • Hypothesis testing II – nonparametric tests
  • Relationships between variables – correlation measures and their interpretation, correlation of qualitative data
  • Regression – linear regression model and its interpretation

Teaching methods
Lectures explaining basic terms and presenting individual examples step by step. Practical training based on 10 exercises that are solved using statistical software.
Assessment methods
Two written tests, the first one practical with the use of computer. Elaboration of all practical excercises is the necessary conditon. Credits may be obtained: A) either for at least 50% points from two tests (all practical exercises are excelent without any mistakes); B) or for 60% points from two tests (only minor formal problems were found in practical exercises).
Language of instruction
Czech
