Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basics of analogue and digital cartography and geoinformatics. The lectures present the basic principles of perception and cognition, introduce the geometric foundations of maps and give an overview of basic cartographic methods for expressing the content of topographic, thematic and general geographic maps and atlases. The basic factors and methods of performing cartographic generalization are characterized. The course also includes basic information on the use of modern technologies in cartography and geography, with an emphasis on geographic information systems (GIS). The course includes an introduction to geoinformatics, spatial science and cartographic visualization. A brief overview of global spatial projects is given. The lecture characterizes the role of spatial information in the global information society and methods for determining its market value.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- understand the fundamentals of analog and digital cartography and geoinformatics;
- know the basic cartographic terminology;
- apply basic cartographic methods for expression of the content of topographic, thematic and general geographic maps and atlases;
- use basic methods of cartographic generalization, and other cartographic techniques;
- create digital maps.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition and definition of spatial data, information and knowledge. Relationship to non-spatial data and information. Terminological definition of Cartography and Geoinformatics. 2. Position of Cartography in the system of sciences, relations to other scientific disciplines. Definition and subject of cartography research. Analog and digital cartography. Development of cartography as a science. 3. Structural foundations of maps. Basics of mathematical cartography, subdivision and properties of cartographic representations with emphasis on the territory of the Czech Republic. 4. Cartographic means of expression. Methods of representing the content of topographic, geographical and thematic maps. Anamorphic maps. Cartographic language. Cartographic interpretation 5. Definitions, basic factors and methods of generalization. Procedures and solutions in classical and computer cartography. Generalization of map content elements: topographic, thematic, geographic. 6. History of cartography, basic overview of development phases in the world and Central European area. 7. Modern technologies and cartography: GIS, GNSS, DPZ: basic trends and findings. 8. Introduction to geoinformatics 9. Theory of spatial science 10. Cartographic visualization. 11. Organizations of cartographers and users of geographic data in the Czech Republic, Europe and the world (ICA, ISPRS, FIG, EUROGI, AGILE, GISIG, etc.), Global projects and the role of cartography and GIS in their solution. 12. The role of geographic information in the global information society, cartography and the new economy. Market value of cartographic and geographic information.
