fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain basic principles of analytical cartography
understand and be able to use basic principles and methods of cartographic generalisation
Learning outcomes
- to describe evolution of cartographic generalization models
- to identify types of graphical conflicts inside of the map field
- to describe basic algorithmic approaches for generalization operators
- to compile steps and parameters of the generalization of a selected section of a topographic map
Syllabus
  • 1. Principles of the Analytical Cartography 2. Map structures and transformations 3. An analytical approach to cartographic generalisation 4. A map face content classification 5. Map objects shapes classification 6. An Uncontextual cartographic generalisation 7. A Contextual cartographic generalisation 8. Generalisation of topographic base 9. An automated map conflation 10. An automated text placement 11. Anamorphosis construction 12. Expert systems in cartography 13. Neural nets in cartography Scope of practical lessons will be:
  • -introducing to alternative GIS software OpenJump
  • -introducing with possibilities and comparing of generalization tools of ArcGIS and OpenJump
